Here Comes the Sun
Our family is not used to sitting still.
These past few months have been difficult...I know we are not the only ones feeling this way. Between Kayla’s spinal fusion surgery in November and Covid (I mean, who thought in a million lifetimes we would be living through a worldwide pandemic? Certainly not me.) we have had a lot of forced downtime. Initially we were so bummed because Kayla was sidelined from activities until she was cleared by her surgeon. Her surgeon cleared her back in May. But guess what? Covid. We missed our annual Rett ski trip this March. We had to postpone a surf event we had been working on for a long time that was supposed to happen in June. We missed Gianna’s entire first high school lacrosse season. National Cup for Abbie’s soccer team was cut short. I dusted off my teaching credential and dug out my laminator to work with Kayla. Thank goodness for an amazing teacher and equally as amazing school staff to guide us. I know almost everyone understands when I say it feels like we have been on hiatus and there is no end in sight.
I have always looked at August and September as a time to start fresh - new school year, new classes, new routines. I have struggled a lot with the news that none of our girls will be attending school in person for the foreseeable future. I realized I need to change my perspective. I need to stop worrying about what is out of my control. Take things in stride. Learn to be grateful for what we do have going on and not focus on all we are missing. Easier said than done, but as always a work in progress.
We are going to start looking towards the future - hopefully we will get to see smiling faces on the slopes this winter. Hopefully we can begin to plan surf days to bring the joy of surfing to those who never thought they would be able. We hope to be able to share a few things we are doing with Kayla at home to keep her busy. We would love to know what everyone else is doing to stay occupied!
I sincerely hope you all are well. Or as well as can be expected. We are just starting to come around to our new normal. Starting to see the sun through the clouds. I hope you are too.
